Search Engine Optimization For Teen Checking Account Products

Search Engine Optimization For Teen Checking Account Products

One important age group that many financial institutions need to focus on reaching are teens.

Why? Because, many of them have no allegiance to a bank or credit union and they have great lifetime value as a customer or member!

I am a good testimony. I was able to open a teen account with my financial institution and now, 20 years later, I am still with them. It is vital for financial institutions to build relationships with young people and earn their business for life.

Increasingly, the Web is where people look for financial providers, especially younger audiences! Additionally, there are some accounts that consumers are able to originate completely online.

So, as consumers are searching for financial providers online an effective search engine optimization plan is vital.

To get a small taste of the search engine rankings for your financial institution, try this little test. Type something like “Checking accounts for teens in (name of your city)”

I did this little test for “Checking accounts for teens in Minneapolis” today and the top five sites that came up organically on Google were:
1. Hennepin County Library
2. Wells Fargo
3. Bank of America
4. Thrivent Financial
5. www.greatschools.net

I find it interesting that no credit unions were in the top five. Especially since credit unions tend to focus marketing in niche geographical areas.

I have read a lot about this site, www.youngfreealberta.com, which is a microsite that a credit union launched in conjunction with a campaign to attract youth. The top five sites that came up when I did the test for “Checking accounts for teens in Alberta” were:
1. Findarticles.com
2. Smallbusinesspbxphone.com
3. youngfreealberta.com
4. CUNA
5. moneyinstructor.com

Wow, in this case there were no banks and only one credit union!

Search engine optimization is impacted by many things such as relevant content at a Website, the coding structure of a Web site, and relevant links back to a Web site. A good SEO campaign may seem like a huge undertaking because it is! But, I think that a strong portion of a financial institution’s marketing budget should be spent on SEO.
